History of SoCoVelo

Southern ColoradoVelo  was founded in 2010 by Brent Buenger and Joe McNearney.   They saw a need for an inclusive bicycle club and racing team in the Colorado Springs area.  The club would educate and promote the sport of cycling.

Our members compete in all levels of competition but membership is open and nonexclusive regardless of cycling experience or racing category.  From the very beginning the team is truly a team for everyone from beginners to pros.  It was built for all cycling disciplines around the one common love of the sport.

The creation of our group is also based on giving back to our sport and community.  Experienced riders can share their passion and experience to newer members.  The camaraderie that develops through racing, riding and training together builds our club.  Our club also works with the community.  One example of this is the Bike Rodeo SoCoVelo puts on each year to educate our young riders.  By providing a fun way to learn the rules of the road in a safe and controlled setting we can give back and promote the sport we love.

From the very beginning SoCoVelo was a member of the American Cycling Association, Colorado Velodrome Association, and USA Cycling registered team.  In 2012 our group finalized status as a 501 C3 for a non-profit to help us continue to grow.

Into 2015 things are looking up for SoCoVelo.  The club has a strong partnership with local non-profit and cycling groups in town.  We had our strongest year of giving back and getting people on bikes.

In 2017 our club, with the help of many other groups including USA Cycling, put on a local Crit race series at Pikes Peak International Raceway.  This marked the first time our club attempted to do the heavy lifting for a race and not just support another race series.  It was a success for the first year with an average attendance around 40 to 60 people per event.

And the pedals keep turning…
